Crystal + Jed | A Love Story from Loyd Calomay Films on Vimeo.
When Crystal and Jed approached me to create a Love Story video for their wedding I knew it would be an opportunity to do something special. Our concept was not only to tell the story of how they “got together” but we wanted to relay the message that you can trace God’s fingerprints at every moment of the courtship (and even years before that). We wanted an entertaining piece and at the same time let it be a testimony of God’s love.
The process began by tagging along during their engagement portrait session with our friends John and Lauren at John Lauren Photography knowing we would use some of this footage in their film. Plus it was a great excuse to run around the Orange County Fair sampling all kinds of deep fried goodies.
Next, I took Jed and Crystal to the Newport Back Bay area and interviewed them separately, each telling their story from their perspective. It didn’t help that we were in a direct path of John Wayne Airport. Note to self: no interviews near airport runways. During this session I began formulating ways to involve others they mentioned in their story (close friends, mentors and pastor) so that we would be able to cut away to other (and sometimes funny) points of view. It wasn’t until I started editing that I added our Red 5 spin on the film (using movie titles to define each chapter) and finding the Facebook thread that tied everything together.
Our final piece to the puzzle was to add footage from the day of the wedding. And what a beautiful day it turned out to be. It was a joy to present the film in front of all their guests and to see them laugh and cry as they watched the story of Crystal & Jed unfold before their eyes.
I want to take this time to praise and thank God for this opportunity to be a part of Crystal and Jed’s wedding and to be able to use the talent He has given me for His glory.

Peichi and Sothea exchanged their wedding vows in a teahouse that overlooked a beautiful Japanese garden. It was a hidden gem located in the middle of the San Fernando Valley, which is where I grew up. I didn’t even know it was there. But it was the perfect setting. A Western ceremony amidst Far East traditions. For their Same Day Edit, Peichi & Sothea thought it would be nice to separate their two ceremonies, their morning tea ceremony and afternoon western ceremony, with two different songs. The first song, a Chinese ballad, and the second song recorded by, appropriately enough, an American Idol. Check out their two-part SDE by clicking the photo above. What we’re gonna do is go back. Way back. Back into time.
I met Sonny, a close friend of my cousin AJ, during my college years. That was in the 90’s. Before cellphones, facebook, iPads, digital video editing and way before any of us were married. We were both part of the same brotherhood, Theta Delta Beta… me from the original UC Irvine chapter and Sonny part of the newly created UCLA chapter.
So when Rocelle & Sonny asked me to capture their wedding day on video and be a part of a new “chapter” in their life , it came with great anticipation. A chance to serve one of my brothers and also an opportunity to shoot back in the town I was born in, Santa Monica.

Well, the forecast for November 28, Desiree and Manny’s wedding day, was rain. But the showers came in the early hours of the morning and the rest of the day was perfect. Though they never had to use one, I used the the love song “Umbrella”, a cool acoustic cover by Boyce Avenue, for their Same Day Edit. Congrats, Desiree and Manny!

When Kat and Don found me they had to go half way around the world. Well, not literally. But with the help of the internet. They came across a brief mention of our studio on the Weddings At Work site, a website dedicated to helping brides and grooms plan weddings… in the Philippines! Thankfully, the wedding was right here in Southern California but Kat & Don’s wedding had all the charm of a celebration “back home”.
I always enjoy a ceremony that openly invites God to be a part of it. It is a reminder of how blessed I am in my own marriage. And if you see me hiding behind the viewfinder of my camera, it’s probably because I’m shedding a tear. Ya, I’ll admit it. I’m a sucker for weddings.
Kat & Don, God bless you in your new life together. Praise Him in the good times, praise Him in the tough times and always look to Him for strength and wisdom.

The blog-a-thon continues!
I love shooting in Downtown Los Angeles. Sure there’s lots of traffic. But I love it when we get to shoot in locations that remind me of how cool L.A. is. Joanna and Alan’s wedding was one of those days.
Location #1: The Standard Hotel. After Joanna opened up the door for us, I scanned the room and thought: This place was made for rock stars. The guest rooms looked like they were designed for partying not sleeping. Strangest piece of furniture: The bathroom had a giant foot statue (and for you LOST fans, it was almost big enough for someone to live in. Just kidding). We also got a quick shot on the legendary rooftop lounge before security told us to move on. Wow… a breathtaking 360 degree view of Downtown L.A.!
Location #2: St. Brendan Catholic Church. Still my favorite church to shoot in in all of SoCal. I could have swam in the rose petals laid out in the center aisle! Beautiful.
Location #3: The Bank (and Neon Museum). Very L.A. chic. Whoever thought of converting an old bank lobby into an art museum/event venue is genius. Very, very cool.
This was the first wedding shoot after my “new daddy” hiatus and it was so much fun to be back. Thank you Joanna and Alan for a memorable wedding! You guys rocked the dance floor.
